North Mianus is a designation given to a community in Greenwich, Connecticut which lies just north of the damned portion of the Mianus RIver at East Putnam Avenue. The freshwater Mianus river is protected from the tidal salt water estuary by a dam. Mianus Pond is the area above the dam. Mianus, formerly known as Mayamus, is unlike other villages such as Old Greenwich and Cos COb in that it does not have its own zip code or post office. Greenwich is approximately 40 minutes by express train from Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan.
After World War II, the town of Greenwich in conjunction with the Veterans Administration developed the village or North Mianus with forty starter houses, each approximately 800 square feet, as rental units for returning service men and their families. As many as 90 children lived in the area with their parents in the 1950s. The area provided an exceptional place to grow and play with it natural habitats, extensive woods, ponds and creeks. Author Jack Scully who grew up in North Mianus has written a collections of coming-of-age poems specifically about his formative years in Mianus Village. Mianus Motor Works, a marine-engine manufacturer is one of the businesses located in Mianus. The city of Greenwich, at the time of the 2010 census, had a population of 61,171 residents. Greenwich is named for “Greenwich” a borough of London, England and home to the Prime Meridian.
